Friday of Firsts

TGIF! We were exhausted and planned to just go home and crash on the couch, but at the last minute, I talked Lucy into going up to our high school`s football game. Since Bigfork is class B in sports, I think the football team is filled by almost every young man who they can stuff into a uniform. Lucy has never experienced watching a football game, nor a small-town sporting event. Didn't take her long to find some friends from school, so she was soon distracted from my fabulous 4-tries-for-a-first-down football lesson. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was nostalgic for me. In Japan, only a handful of parents come out to watch their kids high school sports. Lucy's only remotely related reference was High School Musical, so she was fascinated to see the pep band, cheerleaders, and to hear the announcer (our High School English teacher), and the bleacher pounding feet when the home team scored. Energized me too, so I think we will try to go out and support the other teams. Will Lucy be disappointed that the basketball team doesn`t actually dance in sync during warm ups?

金曜日だ！学校がやっと終わったら、本当は直ぐ家に戻ってのんびりしたかったが、いきなりLucyに「高校生のアメフトゲームに行きましょうか？」行ったことないから、そして高校生の皆が格好いいと思っているから「うん。行きたい！」と言った。町小さいからチームも小さい。たぶん高校の男の子の９割はチームにさせている。日本の高校スポーツ試合には親何人だけが試合に見に来るですが、こちらは町の一般の人がたくさん見に来る。お金も払ってstadiumに入る。Lucyは映画のHigh School Musicalのイメージしかないので、ブラスバンドの応援とチーアガールに興味しんしん。私にはなつかしい。高校生時代の思い出がたくさん浮かびに出た。直ぐLucyは学校の友達に見つけたので、私のアメフトのルール説明は直ぐ無視したけど、町のチームがゴールに入ったら皆が客席に足をうるさく踏み始まったら、Lucyは喜んで踏みだした。また試合に行く約束しました。今度はbasketballにいきましょうかな〜。High School Musical見たいに皆は歌て踊り出すのはしないのがLucyはがっかりしないならいいだけどね。

Evening Snapshot

Nights are quiet now after Lucy has gone to bed. Got all my creature comforts though...Ready for some self-induced cabin fever pretty soon!

Lucyが寝た後が静か。何となく心も静かです。。。もう直ぐは自分で「cabin fever」季節に入りたい。一日が少し短くなると同じ程度に段々どこでも行きない、家にのんびりしかない季節が始まる。気持よさそう。

School Starts

School started this week with new faces, a crazy mix of personalities, talents, and smiling faces. I'm still in 3rd grade, and Lucy is in 2nd. She is trying out our school's Montessori-style class, which combines 1st and 2nd graders. One young gal in her class has Type 1 Diabetes, and has to get her blood sugar tested before lunch every day. And on Wednesday, the class had a visit from a young gal who is bedridden and suffers from a sever immune deficiency disease. When everyone in the class is sickness-free, she will visit their classroom a couple days a week for a few hours. What a huge impression these two sweet girls made on Lucy her first week. More than any textbook, the little events in our lives and the interactions we have with people are the greatest education we receive, right?
火曜日から学校が始まった。この写真は小学校の玄関です。Lucyは２年生で私はまた３年生の担当。朝の早起きは大変でしたが教室に着いたらやっぱ楽しいね。子供は可愛い。色々な性格、能力、笑顔をみて面白い。　Lucyのクラスはメズラしいでモンテソリ式の１年生と２年生は一緒になっています。１人の子は糖尿病で昼休み前に血の検査しないといけない。後一人は大病持ちの子で寝っきりしてずっと点滴して、学校はたまにしか来れない。水曜日は学校に来て、Lucyはすごく感動して、大きいな印象を与えました。教科書より一日の生活と人の関係が一番勉強になるね。

Bargaining Baggage

Got baggage? No, not the carry-on vs. checked baggage question. Got a history of gunk you carry with you from your past, present, or virtual life? Yep, we all do. A wonderful passage in a book I happened to open at a friend's house the other day has been my ray of hope these past couple months. When I can find a copy of the book to quote it properly, I will, but what it gently told me was that YOUR FUTURE IS WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO CARRY WITH YOU. If you choose to take regret, anger, bitterness, or cynicism with you, that is exactly what you will have in the future. But, if you instead choose to carry with you compassion, empathy, hope and joy, that's what you will have to accompany you on the journey. I've got my baggage packed with care, not in neat quart-size ziplock bags mind you, but nevertheless packed with care. Bon Voyage... tomorrow looks to be a great day for a trip.

将来の旅は自分で持って行く荷物を決められる。今から必要な者って何でしょう。それだけ持って行けばいい。よし。。。行って行きます。

4 Generations

先週は私のばあちゃん、Lucyのひおばあちゃん、がモンタナに遊びに来ました。その時の写真です。最後の写真は４世代の写真です。皆は似ていますか？

Parade Fun!

今週はLucyは５日間を自家でGrandmaとGrandpaと過ごしました。今週はIllinois州からのJohnおじさんも自家に遊びに来ました。それと今週は町の農業際の週でした。農業際の始まりはParadeだ。びっくりの事で、paradeの中はコンクリート車がコンクリートの代わりに飴が入って、回りながら飴がだらだら出って来ました。前歳にparadeに参加しているみたい。傘か箱を用意している人がいたらしい。すごいね。
